Our Q&A With Wedding Planner Hitch’d – An Aussie Girl Living The Bali Dream

This vibrant soul has graced us with her creativity, eye for detail and love for love – creating unique weddings for each of her brides, complete with her special ‘quirk’. Seeing her role as a planner as nothing less than an honour, we had the pleasure of sitting for a few moments together, learning about the beautiful bells and whimsical whistles of her life, her business, and of course, Bali.

In a coconut shell, tell us about your lovely self and your business?
I am a Perth girl living the dream in Bali! I lived in Bali when I was much younger, moved to Perth for schooling and visited my family here all the time – Bali is basically my second home! I was super lucky to get an ‘in’ to the events world when I arrived, allowing me to see the amazing beauty this island has to offer. Hitch’d was born from wanting to create unique events with a hint of quirk, ones that show who our clients are as people and couples along with little touches of our own creative flair.

How did it all begin?
After working for other companies in the event industry I knew I could bring something a little special to Bali and to the destination event experience. I thought if I could create a company the way I wanted and have the bonus of working for myself and create events I am passionate about, why not give it a go. And here we are! I know people are after something a little different and something a little more personal and I believe I can offer that and so much more. Hitch’d is a dream coming to life for me and I plan to continue to bring other people’s event dreams to life, one at a time!

What’s your super-power?  And what’s unique about your business?
Being human! Being human is so important to us and we feel this is what makes us massively different. We are 100% open and honest, talking and emailing the same as we would to our long time friends – Expect lots of WOOO’s and HOORAY’s! We are so far from corporate or ‘structured’, this isn’t the kind of company or people we are. We get just as excited as our clients about their event, it’s what we live, breathe and love to do. We aim to build friendships as well as events (a little lame but we love love after all!).

Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Our gorgeous clients! Everyone is so different so we try to draw inspiration from who they are and what they’re loving. A good view also helps, if I have a window with a stunner of a view I can create for days, haha! Add a bit of Pinterest, Instagram and Home / Wedding Magazine flicking, you’ve got yourself a winner!

Who is your creative muse?
Not who, but what – Coffee and a good view! Also a collection of other creatives – stylists, architecture and music all is so inspiring pushes me to the next level!

Why is it important to have a wedding planner in Bali?
No stress! We take care of everything so you don’t have to. Not only this, but we are familiar with the Island so are already able to give advice and know what, who and when works best. Trying to scout the best florist, photographer, all of these things can be so tedious and stressful when you don’t know where to start, so having someone like Hitch’d who have this all in their ‘little black book’ (actually a catalogue…) is a massive starting point. Lastly, trying to piece it all together and hope it runs itself on the day is a huge risk. We don’t want couples worrying about anything except what their next cocktail will be, so we make sure this is all taken care of as well by running the show on the D-Day.As we say, ‘All you need is love, we do the rest’!

If you could give one piece of advice to couples planning a Bali wedding, what would it be?
Get a planner, haha! Not even joking though. As mentioned above, the less stress you have to deal with the better! Another little piece of advice is to be flexible, particularly with dates! The hardest part of planning any event on an Island is there may be limits. We try our best to make everything our client’s want happen and 99% of the time we will, however there are times when things just aren’t doable and we’d hate for your heart to be broken by this. So if you’re up for a bit of creativity, this is our specialty and we’ll always find an amaze alternative!

How big a part do your couples play in the creative process – or are they generally happy for you to run the show?
We want our couples to be part of the whole planning process, after all – it’s their day, not ours. We get them to provide as much info as possible on what they want, from here we build their Design Brief based on this and some Hitch’d twists, then go back and forth to perfect the overall look and design of their day. The timing is then looked at and again we go back and forth to make sure the day includes everything they’re wanting and at the right times for them. If they’re happy for us to go ahead and take the lead and build a day for them from our own thoughts, we are definitely more than happy to do this – creative freedom!

What’s the trickiest part about being a destination wedding planner?
Not being able to see our couples all the time. We live off email and Skype/Facetime sessions, and we do try to see couples whenever we are travelling. We know how hard it is to trust your special day with someone other than yourself, so we try our hardest to ensure they feel as comfortable as possible and see our faces as much as possible too. As said before, we are here as friends as well as their planners!

For you, how has the Bali Wedding industry changed over the years?
Bali has developed so much in terms of quality and service. Everyone is pushing boundaries with what can be created, served and generally provided to couples. They are focusing on the finer details now more so than before. You are getting 5-star catering, amazing custom designs for set ups, things like this – it wasn’t around before. The suppliers we work with are unbelievable in what they are able to produce and we are so grateful we get to grow with each and every one of them. Now, we are able to bring a more detailed, modern and unique experience to our events because as a collective, the island has a desire to develop and grow.

Can you tell us about your most memorable Wedding moment or memory?
I have so many memories, but the memory which sticks with me is the same for each wedding: The Groom & Bride’s faces as the Bride makes her way down the aisle. And if the Groom sheds a tear, I’m done – I become a teary mess. I remember the faces of both the Bride and Groom, that that particular moment is one of the happiest moments of their lives, and we get to be part of it, even if we are lurking in the corner somewhere watching haha!

What wedding trends never go out of fashion?
Rustic. This trend can be done in so many ways, there will always be a ‘new rustic’ with wooden elements, pastel or deep tones, all white, you can do anything and have the rustic charm peak through.
